LattéLife's New Power Base

Nicole & Keith               Matt Handbury           Reg Grundy               Miriam Margolyes                 James Fairfax
It's like a roll call of Australia's most powerful citizens : businessmen like billionaire poker machine king Len Ainsworth, properly mogul Theo Onosforou, show biz giants Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban, Miriam Margolyes and Reg Grundy, publishing family scions James Fairfax and Matt Handbury, horse trainer Gae Waterhouse and artists John Olsen and Tim Storrier.

Bill Ranken                John Olsen                          Theo Onosforuw                         Len Ainsworth                    Tim Storrier
All have two things in common- they live in beautiful homes in the surrounds of NSW's gorgeous Southern Highlands just an hour's drive from Sydney and all will be amongst the readers of LattéLife's new Highland's edition of the popular Eastern suburb's newspaper.
In a few short years LatteLife has grown to a circulation of 50,000 in Sydney with the new edition boosting that to 80,000 to an audience that now contains a concentration of the most powerful Australians in politics, business and the arts.
Two experienced editors have been appointed- Monique Butterworth will oversee the Sydney edition while Bowral local Alex Speed will take on local newspapers. Both will continue the current lively mix of news, interviews with locals , colourful offerings from social snapper Bill Ranken (who fortunately lives in both places- Elizabeth Bay and on a splendid property near Goulborn) motoring tips from Aaron Zerefos and the newsy snippets that have drawn advertisers flocking to the pages, making rivals look decidedly dull by comparison.

Sleeping Rough Tonight

Cardboard City at the Carriageworks in Redfern

St Vincents de Paul- or Vinnies as they are known, are one of the Shuttle's favourite charities. They raise millions$$ via various activities and their charity shops all over the country. Eastern Suburb's Vinnie shops sell amazing designer outfits and our favourite Paddington store gets a fantastic selection of Savile Row shirts at rock bottom prices. Check them out.
Their annual sleep out to raise funds for, and highlight homelessness in one of the richest countries on the planet is underway as we speak. Thousands are sleeping rough tonight in cardboard boxes (supplied by Visy) all over the land. The Shuttle's bad back and a prior date with the ABC's new series Carlotta means we can't make it but others are far more generous than us : right : Latte Life newspaper honcho Cris King has already raised thousands of dollars. Above : Mamamia editor Jamila Rizvi sends a message that many woman are homeless tonight

Play It Sam

The Shuttle's spy disguised as a multi-coloured cocktail umbrella at the glitzy new Double Bay nightclub Casablanca tells us there were a few ruffled feathers over the latest LattéLife Newspaper edition which pictured the club's manager Karim Gharbi surrounded by a bevy of beauties in it's What's Hot & What's Not page labeling the snap as "cringeworthy".
Having worked in New York and London as a publicist for some pretty big names, the Shuttle was taught at early age : all publicity is good as long as the name is spelt correctly.
Apparently Karim has now seen the light and the value of such excellent publicity. Indeed it's a pretty handsome snap and Karim looks his always elegant self and if they are the staff members a customer would find in Casablanca- success is assured.

However we haven't heard yet what the reaction has been from the delectable Laura Csorton who appears in the same newspaper with an opinion writer questioning Laura's decision to sponsor Harpic which is - a toilet cleaner.
Let's face it, if you look like Laura you can sell anything !

# The quote "Play it again Sam" is a common mistake made about the classic film Casablanca. Humphrey Bogart never actually said the words but Ingrid Bergman did say "play it Sam".

Society falls apart..

Following the jailing of Andrew 'Baci' Whitlam, for supplying drugs-a close friend and the 'godson' of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam  - now  the Eastern Suburb's local magazine Latte Life has a story on the arrest of the owner of the on-line social website Urban Life Lisa Stockbridge for allegedly dealing in cocaine.

read it here.

## Sydney's most expensive harbour side mansion Elaine is on the market for around $100M . The original property on which Elaine stands comprises of 8 separate titles but the building itself is not  National Trust listed so there is every chance the property will end up being divided up into smaller lots

Taking Over

Judy & Michael McMahon                   Cristian & Jane King

The popular Eastern Suburb's newspaper Latte Life continues in it's campaign to become the area's most read newspaper now distributing over 50,000 copies from Watsons Bay to Surry Hills, outstripping it's Fairfax rival. And it's only taken 3 short years.
Shari Lee Hitchcock & Dallen Nickols,Aaron Zerefos and pal
Under the stewardship of publisher Jane King, Latte Life began as a newsletter and quickly morphed into a newspaper which breaks stories- the latest issue with an exclusive tale on a security lapse during the recent visit of HRH Prince Harry and a shocking expose about foreign students being forced to clean offices for no pay. Plus a few ruffled feathers with Wentworth MP Malcolm Turnbull a bit miffed about a story from the last issue.
All this success was a good reason to throw a birthday bash at the exclusive Hugo's Lounge in Kings Cross and naturally the Shuttle was only too happy to celebrate along with friends, staff and advertisers. Joining the throng, Watson Bay party gal Shari Lee Hitchcock, Theo Onosforou, Rose Bay restaurant owners Michael & Judy McMahon, Fiji Water honcho Aaron Zerefos and cartoonist Mike Lodge.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore hosted and SBS presenter Lee Lin Chin officiated at a party to launch the City of Sydney's Asia On Your Doorstep, a celebration of the amazing and inviting variety of Asian restaurants on offer in the Emerald City.
In the recently decorated and very grand Lord Mayor’s Reception Room at Sydney Town Hall, Consuls and Ambassadors from a number of our Asian neighbours joined locals like Kerri Anne Kennerly , PR powerhouse Deidre O'Loghlin, Glen Marie Frost, NSW Tourism Minister George Souris MP and Masterchef winner Adam Liaw, along with top foodies Joanna Savill, Maeve O'Meara, some media types like Susie Elelman and Indira Naidoo and one of Sydney's nicest couples, Sir James & Lady Hardy.

Lee Lin Chin must be the most elegantly dressed newsreader on Australian TV as you can see from our pic here with Indira Naidoo- and note  her superb Jimmy Choo pumps.

Go to the official Asia On Your Doorstep website to find participating venues and you could win a trip to Thailand.

Arrivals

Significant events :
Congratulations to motivational speaker and advertising guru Siimon Reynolds and his gorgeous wife Kathryn Eisman who have taken possession of a beautiful daughter, Capri. The happy trio now live in the USA.
                                                     *************************
The Shuttle has felt the sharp tongue of a tabloid hack from one of Australia's oldest media organisations that is losing sales at around 20% a year and has sacked hundreds of workers in the past 5 years. The mocking in print we received defies the fact the Shuttle has had around 2 million readers in the past 3 years and has about 2200 visitors a day.
The arrogance of the established media knows no bounds yet when The Guardian set up a local online newspaper less than a year ago it succeeded in becoming the third daily visited website in Australia.
Pierre Omidyar                   Glenn Greenwald
A few months we were contacted in relation to a top secret project underway : and now the news is out.
EBAY founder and billionaire Pierre Omidyar is putting $250M into a new media organisation that is to be headed by Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald of Edward Snowden fame. Omidyar and Greenwald intend bypassing the printed media and old style hacks who seem oblivious to the rapidly changing world.
                                                     ********************
Meanwhile the highly successful local Eastern Suburbs newspaper Latte Life which now distributes throughout Surry Hills, Paddington, Double Bay and Darlinghurst will celebrate it's 3rd Birthday with a gala party tonight at Hugos in Kings Cross !. And they said it wouldn't last...congrats to all.

Copy This ! : Designer's Anger at Newspaper

Strong words have been appeared on Facebook with professional Australian designers expressing their disgust at an advertisement that appeared in the Fairfax newspaper The Sun Herald on the weekend.
Heidi Dokulil, former editor of Monument Magazine and co-founder of the respected Australian Design Unit posted:
"SMH you should be ashamed of yourself! Yesterday's advertorial for copycat furniture placed opposite the work of an absolute design legend is disgusting. The headline 'make a classic choice' rubs salt in the wound and shows just how low some major newspapers are going to make advertising $$. Design rip-offs hurt the industry and the thousands of hardworking local designers. What next SMH, a feature on Coco Chanel flanked by fakes? I'd like to see how that goes down"Ouch !.
Other designers have condemned the positioning of the advert for 'replica' Eames furniture and were busy arranging an email campaign to the Sun Herald. Some have forwarded a complaint to Media Watch
An Eames original can sell for around $5400 while the Taiwanese copy, sold out of a showroom in inner Sydney goes for just $1800. In 2011 the US Henry Miller company which distributes furniture designed by the legendary Americans Charles and Ray Eames reached a settlement with the distributor but they are still trading on the valuable Eames name.

left : a genuine Eames chair and right : the "replica"
The Double Bay newspaper Latte Life found recently when it discovered a local shop flogging handbags that looked identical to well known brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton, that the law is difficult to get enforced and authorities can be apathetic much to the annoyance of other shopkeepers in the Bay selling genuine goods.
China is famous for producing 'replicas' (today's speak for rip-off) of just about anything including a Rolls Royce Phantom, Mini Cooper and the humble Toyota Corolla. While the Rolls copy, labelled a Geely GE sells for just $30,000  a genuine Rolls Phantom can cost up to $1M.
Australia is not new to rip off designs. In the days before the Internet one fashion store chain owner turned property developer was known for having models and friends regularly bring back a suitcase of the latest London and Paris designs which were whipped up into copies in local factories and on sale within days of their appearance on the international catwalks
                                             ********************************
As the election campaign revs into high gear, a 'replica' front page newspaper war has also broken out on Facebook after the Daily Telegraph published it's front page attack upon prime Minster Kevin Rudd.
Those firmly in the Labor camp were furious and a replica was soon on-line replacing KRudd with Tony Abbott. By the end of the day Rupert Murdoch's face had replaced Abbott's. By midnight News Ltd journalists were in the firing line.
And this is just Day One !

Hazel Hawke & Which Bank ?

Hazel Hawke who died last month was a much loved public figure who stood steadfastly by her ex-husband Prime Minster Bob Hawke, demonstrating amazing loyalty, even as Bob was having an affair with his biographer Blanche d'Alpuget who he later married.

Aussies took Hazel to their hearts and watched sadly as she succumbed to Alzheimer's disease. Hazel openly publicized her plight in the hope it would aid other sufferers. When she died the plaudits came thick and fast and Hazel was given a State Memorial Service at the Sydney Opera House as this page from the current Latte Life newspaper shows.
Alas for the Commonwealth Bank which has just launched a series of 'customer friendly' adverts, the passing of a former First Lady seems to have slipped their attention. This week they sent a missive addressed to Hazel to the old Ritz Carlton building in Double Bay where she lived for a time.
The Shuttle's operative sent the letter back with the following exchange. Perhaps the news hasn't reached Mumbai yet :
@CommBank Hazel Hawke is deceased

Plenty of Flavour in this Latte

Transvaal Avenue in Double Bay
While daily newspapers are losing readers at the rate of up to 20% every 6 months, former Fairfax editor Andrew Jaspan says it's the local publications that will be the beneficiaries as readers turn to specialised newspapers. Double Bay's Latte Life, now in it's 3rd year seems to be proving Jaspan right as it goes from strength to strength.

The Shuttle recently witnessed a well known newspaper columnist verbally attack an 18 year old intern from Latte Life over an alleged slight at a recent Kings Cross party- they must be something right.
This week's edition has an up and close interview with the paparazzi Jamie Fawcett who has emerged from the manicured bushes of the Bay-one of his haunts-to give his thoughts on local celebrity hunting, and also brings an update on the scandal they broke some months ago the outrageous shop in the Bay that is still selling luxury label rip-offs right under the noses of some of the smartest boutiques in the country.
All this comes courtesy of a new journalist Jonathon Marshal (known in the trade as  Maverick Marshall) who broke the story about stripper parties at the once snooty former Ritz Carlton Hotel in the Bay-one time home of such notables as Bob Hawke, Bill Clinton, Madonna, Princess Diana and George Bush Sn.
Pick up a copy around the cafes of Double Bay or you can read Latte Life online here.

Bright Young Things #1 (a new series)

He's just turned 18 but Cristian King (right) of Easter Suburb's newspaper Latte Life already has all the hallmarks of an old pro.

Having seen off one of the countries top gossip columnists with a flea in his ear after said scribe objected to a Latte Life item, Cristian has turned his gaze upon one of Australia's most influential broadcasters Alan Jones and put the rarely interviewed radio star under an intense grilling which will be published next week in Latte Life.
The Shuttle's spy disguised as fine china teacup discreetly placed on a side table by Jones' impeccably dressed butler in Alan's magnificent Circular Quay apartment  reports nothing was off limits and Jones at one stage left the room to compose himself before returning to answer King's questions which might have had lesser mortals screaming, "impertinence !".
Order your copy now at your favourite Double Bay coffee shop : that's Latte Life !! We can't wait.

Why Mel B Fled Oz

Just as the Shuttle exclusively revealed that Mel B and husband Stephan Belafonte had moved into a Vaucluse apartment, overlooked by the Double Newspaper editor Jane King of Latte Life, we can also reveal why the family are now packing up just 6 weeks after moving in and Scary Spice has flown to the USA..

And it isn't as the woeful daily newspapers reported because she was having visa problems ( people like Mel B don't have visa: problems- Mel and Stephan are taking out Australian citizenship) it's because Mel is to become a judge on America's Got Talent along with radio jock Howard Stern and Howie Mandel.

So many times we tell News Ltd & Fairfax to check details with us first but do they ?. No. The UK's Daily Mail does though.

Mel B : Out of Frying Pan into Fire

Inset : Jamie Fawcett
Fun loving Sydney resident and ex-Spice Girl Mel B has found new digs in the ritzy Eastern Suburbs after tiring of her harbour-side house which has become well known to the media.

Jane King
Mel and hubby Stephen Belafonte hope for more privacy and to shield their family from the gaze of paparazzi Jamie Fawectt.  Mel has already obtained an interim apprehended violence order (AVO) against the photographer.

Alas, Melanie has moved into the orbit of the local newspaper Latte Life. Editor Jane King discovered the identity of her new neighbours when she went to see why her 2 children were dancing in the garden of her Vaucluse house to the strains of Wannabe. There was Mel and her brood, sunbathing on their balcony in full view of the King house.
Fortunately a regular visitor to the King home, Latte Life social photographer Bill Ranken (right) is far too much of a gentleman to photograph Mel from over the back garden fence. He's very observant though. Mel. you have been warned.                           below : the Spice Girls and Wannabe:

Feathers Ruffled in Snooty Suburb

Double Bay is one of Sydney's snootiest suburbs with it's pleasant tree lined shopping precincts and cafes. Perfect for star spotting on a lazy afternoon. It's often referred to as an Antipodean Rodeo Drive.

Just 2 years ago a small local newspaper called Latte Life sprang into life and took on the big guns of the Eastern Suburbs, like the Fairfax Media owned Wentworth Courier one of the world's most advertising sodden publications.

With a small staff Latte Life has uncovered a major scandal right under the noses of some of Australia's major retailers : a 'pop-up' shop that appeared not long ago and which is brazenly selling a range of counterfeit goods. And who was the intrepid investigator who uncovered this major scandal : a 17 year old junior office staffer.

Big Picture,Big Fail.

New York photographer Bill Cunningham
Bill Ranken (Katie Preston Toepfer)
One of the regular gripes of the Shuttle is today's new breed of 'publicists',  PRs or whatever they are called these days.  Usually coming armed with a degree from somewhere.  Apart from a few notable exceptions they can be arrogant, grand and basically clueless about the job they do.

All three contributors to the Shuttle have worked in the media and with publicists in New York, London, LA, Paris, Melbourne or Sydney with about 100 years of experience between us.
Without a doubt, Sydney has the grandest PRs of them all.
We've inter-acted with publicists in London and New York who handle some of the biggest names in the movie business and some of the most successful products and brand names in the world. They are on the whole professional. polite, knowledgeable about their product and the business and most especially, the media. In Melbourne or Adelaide they will be far better mannered.

Hand in hand with this lot come a few photo agencies who have corrupted the entire process, stacking press shoots, promotional functions, movie premieres and so on with part-time aggressive , arrogant photographers armed with digital cameras and with nil interest in the subject. It's all about money.

A perfect example of how today's publicists really fail on the job is when one of Australia's most senior and most respected photographers and Shuttle contributor Bill Ranken telephoned both Myer and David Jones about their recent Spring/Summer fashion parades.
You would think that Ranken representing the local newspaper Latte Life that circulates throughout the well heeled suburbs of Sydney's Eastern suburbs, to the most wealthy streets and residents in this country, to readers with wallets stacked with cash and credit cards to spend on fashion, would be welcomed to join the ranks of the scruffs in the media pen. Alas, he was 'too late' according to a PR operative.
Darryn Lyons

At 83 years of age there is  a very good reason for having Ranken cover your event. Like Bill Cunningham in New York. he knows everybody and their mother (and often dated their grandmother). It's an important factor. Meanwhile the Shuttle was there and noted 2 photo agencies had at least 8 snappers between them in a sort of scatter gun approach of garnering photographs of today's instant 'celebrities' from every conceivable angle. We've searched high and low and not one single picture they took has been published. One newspaper photographer, a regular on the scene, walked off in disgust as he was asked time and time again the name of each person he snapped, by the paparazzi.

When the Big Picture agency burst on the scene over a decade ago, the cockatoo haired owner Darryn Lyons acted like he was about to re-create tabloid publishing as we know it. Perhaps he was right.
The Daily Telegraph recently ran this piece Revealed: How truth and lies mingle in Lara Bingle's nude photo scandal, reality was something different.
In April  London's Telegraph newspaper revealed how Big Picture had been paying a Virgin Airlines employee to supply flight details of the travel movements of stars.

Now the UK Press Gazette says the agency is having trouble paying staff and photographers.
