Kardashian mayhem in suburbia !

Admission : we haven't actually watched the televised shenanigans of the Kardashian family but their presence in our lives hasn't gone unnoticed. We did meet Kourtney Kardashian at a small reception at Ottos on the Finger Wharf in Woolloomooloo earlier this year. She was very nice. 

They must be the most famous US family since the '50s when the Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet  was followed by millions of fans and their son, heartthrob Ricky Nelson (below) was the Justin Bieber of his day. 

We digress, 2 younger members of the Kardashians, Kendall & Kyle Jenner, both successful models, appeared this morning in suburban Parramatta at the ginormous Westfield shopping centre to launch a range of clothing.
Dramatically one disgruntled attendee decided to decorate the stage with eggs & tomatoes flung from the first floor. No Kardashian was hurt during this protest. But we think a few hundred school girls may be sanctioned tomorrow for wagging a day off school.  

Such is life sunny Sydney. The fun never stops. Like those Jenner legs !

Meet Darth Vadar

 To the Langham Hotel in The Rocks to meet the stars of the play Driving Miss Daisy on the first day of rehearsals.
 Hollywood greats Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones are in town to reprise their Broadway hit of the original play by Alfred Uhry.

 The 1987 movie version won Australian director Bruce Beresford a few Oscars and took around $300M at the box office.


  Angela has been here once befiore- in 1959 where she lived for 4 months in Point Piper while she filmed Summer of The Seventeenth Doll with Earnest Borgnine, Ann Baxter and her pal John Mills. At the time she hired a car and drove around NSW with her children exploring the state.
 On this visit she and James Earl Jones, who was famously the voice of Darth Vadar in the Star Wars flicks will be touring for 5 months visiting Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.

James was here ten years ago as a tourist and it's the first visit for 4 times Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines who completes the cast. With tickets selling like hotcakes it's another winner for producer John Frost- known as Frostie on Broadway but Mr Frost in London's West End.

The Shuttle caused a minor commotion when James Earl Jones asked which was the most 'right wing newspaper' in town. "They all are " replied the Shuttle accurately which went down well with the other media attending with one even apologising to the actors for gifting the world Rupert Murdoch.

And the big question of the morning for which we received no answer : just what was that monkey doing in the mural on the wall behind our esteemed thespians ?. Had a mischievous interior designer been inspired by Richard Nevile and the School Kid's Oz magazine ala Rupert Bear?

It's another classic example of the power of the net that has seen Justin Beiber, Cody Simpson and Christian The Lion shoot to stardom after their youtube videos went haywire.

This youtube video appeared quietly about 4 months ago. It's young US teen Jonah Mowry talking about his experiences as a bullied gay lad in school.
He prefaced it with a message that he felt suicidal. It's a real tearjerker and thousands of followers linked to it and pretty soon Jonah had over 2 milliion hits and tens of thousands of 'likes' compared to a few hundred 'dislikes'.

Then the blogger Perez Hilton chipped in and pretty soon Jonah had thousands of twitter followers  and was becoming a media star. The US ABC network interviewed him and singer Ricky Martin tweeted “one big rib breaking hug :0) ! Stay strong buddy! You are 1 courageous young man!!!”.

An appearance on Ellen de Generes was surely soon to follow.

Now Jonah has a new video up were he appears to be fairly flippant about his previous claims and says he has 'thousands' of people at school who like him. The backlash is only just beginning as the video responses are posted on youtube giving young Jonah a roasting and claiming him to be a fake. What do think ?

Cody Mania Is Upon Us

The Shuttle's discovery Cody Simpson arrives back in town tomorrow so get set for Cody Mania as he does the rounds of promotional appearances.

At the ripe old age of 14 Cody has been steadily building a huge following in the USA but now he's been taken under the wing of manager Scooter Braun. And Braun is the one who rocketed Justin Beiber to stardom with his clever mix of studio producer Usher, choice of songs and the moulding of his image. Justin is now 17 and getting a bit long in the tooth as newcomers like Cody and 14 year old Jack Vidgen dog his footsteps.

Simpson was discovered via the same route as Beiber, posting his videos on YouTube. Atlantic records snapped him up in 2009 and moved he and his family from the Gold Coast to LA. His latest release Coast To Coast is no12 in the US charts . Next Thursday he will appear at  Warringah Mall and on Friday at  the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. Expect chaos.

There are plenty of YouTube videos of Cody Simpson but this one is rather nice-singing a song he wrote.

Aussies Named In Time's 'Most Influential'

Time Magazine calls them the most influential people in the world : artists and activists, reformers and researchers, heads of state and captains of industry. "Their ideas spark dialogue and dissent and sometimes even revolution."

Amongst Nobel prize winners like Aung San Suu Kyi and world leaders Barack Obama,Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel, celebrities such as Colin Firth, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Ford and Justin Beiber and a terrorist- Anwar al-Awlaki are two Australians Julian Assange and the emerging star, 22 year old Mia Wasikowska.

Mia, who was born in Canberra got her start in the medical soap All Saints in 2005 and hit the big time when she co-starred with Johnny Depp in Tim Burton's 3D production of Alice In Wonderland.

It's the most sought after invite at the Academy Awards ceremony. The Vanity Fair Oscar's party hosted by editor Graydon Carter.

Most of those attending the awards either rush off first to the Governor's Ball and then, if invited to the Vanity Fair bash or Elton John's Aid's benefit. The big plus at the Vanity Fair do is that they invite all the older Hollywood legends so it becomes a mix of ageing and newer starlets, sporting stars, new and old music identities and the real Hollywood power brokers like Summer Redstone  and director Oliver Stone.

Sarah recently joined  Youth Minister Kate Ellis's advisory board to help foster a healthy body image for youth which includes a policy for fashion magazine editors to label doctored and photo shopped pictures so that young people do not get an unrealistic belief in how one can look. She also appeared on the front cover of the Australian Women's Weekly last November au naturel, flaws and all.

The SMH 'PS' column quotes a spokes person for Sarah saying : ''Sarah never said she would never again appear in a retouched photo. Her appearance on the cover of the AWW untouched was and remains an incredibly bold and important statement,'' PS was curtly informed. ''Sarah will, of course, continue to appear in both completely natural campaigns as well as photos that require hair, make-up and retouching to suit a client's needs, as you would expect from any professional."

Here are our exclusive pics from the launch of Australia's Next Top Model a fortnight ago which was hosted by Sarah Murdoch along with her fellow judges from the show, fashion designer Alex Perry and Charlotte Dawson. Both Charlotte and Alex seem to have obtained a stretched smooth look. But Sarah looks quite amazing..gorgeous!

A victory for the little man !

To the Channel 7 studios for a public performance by Justin Bieber. This was a dangerous mission. About five thousand teenyboppers were there in the streets in the grip of Biebermania. Bieber is minute, tiny-perfectly formed. Undeniably as cute as a button, confident and extremely professional.

Someone I first mistook for a slightly older fan, his mum, confirmed my suspicions. Far from being a phenomena on youtube with the home produced films of his singing, Justin has been attending every known class for dance and song since he was about 3. Which isn't long ago.

The police called off the outside performance claiming it unsafe. Those of us privileged to be inside stood as far as we could from the giant plate glass windows facing Martin Place that seemed to throb as waves of tearful hysteria come from the wild eyed girls in the street.

Justin was singing and dancing in front of us, the fans outside were going berserk. 3 constables manned the barricades just a metre from the windows which I was sure were about to crack as the girls surged forward to rip little Justin to pieces. There wouldn't be much of Justin to go around.

Firass Dirani

Another small star had a victory of some sorts. Firass Dirani who stars as nightclub promoter John Ibrahim in the purported tale of Kings Cross police corruption Underbelly, The Golden Mile has been voted Cosmo's Bachelor Of The Year at the Zeta Bar in the Hilton Hotel. Firass is about the same size as Bieber but thankfully, the camera lies. He looks like a 6 foot hunk in the series. He does have piercing blue eyes though. Or are they contacts?.

By contrast the party at the Bulgari on the same night to launch their exhibition of famous jewellery was as good as it gets. The chilled Louis Roederer champagne and Belinda Frank's catering helped.

The Bulgari family have been buying up some of their previous masterpieces for years and this exhibition features some of the treasures. It was in Rome last week, will be in Sydney for another 7 days and then heads for Paris. They won't quite say who owned some of the diamonds and rubies but a few names get mentioned in passing.

Diamond Liz

The Duchess of Manchester was a Bulgari fan. Elizabeth Taylor still is. Apparently when Liz was filming Cleopatra and began her affair with Richard Burton, her then husband Eddie Fisher plied her with Bulgari jewels in an effort to woe her back.

Burton did likewise and won the fight. Taylor ended getting Fisher's invoice from Bulgari which he had refused to pay. Bulgari never did get payment but figured having Liz wearing their creations was more than enough in publicity value.

The Seven Wonders

One amazing necklace must be seen to be believed. The Seven Wonders of The World is one large emerald surrounded by 6 slightly smaller ones in a diamond encrusted necklace. That's about 160 carats of emeralds and around 116 of diamonds.

It was purchased by an Italian industrialist as a wedding present for his wife. Years later when she had to go into an aged nursing home she sold it back to Bulgari on the understanding it wouldn't be re-sold while she was alive.

When she was filling in the form for the retirement home she got to the part that said "occupation'. "I've never worked " she puzzled." what should I put " She wrote-'well off' !.
