2015 Archibald Prize winner Announced
Artist Nigel Milsom has won the Archibald with his portrait of colourful barrister-around-town, film producer, novelist, film script writer (Rake) and newspaper columnnist Charles Waterstreet.
Says Milson : ‘"I’ve known Charlie indirectly and directly since birth. I was born in Albury around the corner from the Waterstreet
Hotel, owned and managed by his parents. On Friday afternoons, my father
used to sell them freshly caught Murray cod to earn extra money for
materials he needed to complete a boat he was building at home, which
later sank to the bottom of the Murray River during its maiden voyage
one freezing afternoon."
Perhaps the claw like hands (left) are a reference to Waterstreet's 1987 production of Howling 111.
And the famous Packer's Prize : chosen by the workers at the NSW Gallery-has been picked up by Bruno Jean Grasswill ( husband of ABC "Australian Story" producer Helen Grasswill ) with his portrait of actor Michael Caton. (pictured left inset)
Below are just a selection of this year's Archibald entries. The full exhibition can be viewed from Monday at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Superman Fails Julia
In the end, the pleadings of superstar Russell Crowe couldn't save Australia's first female Prime Minister Julia Gillard from the combined attacks from Kevin Rudd and the chorus line of media hacks at News Ltd, Fairfax and the ABC.
Here is Julia Gillard's elegant resignation speech. But following is her real speech- the one she wanted to say channeled by comedienne Jackie Loeb.

Vale ABC presenter Alan Saunders
Sad news today with the sudden death of ABC presenter Alan Saunders who has passed away from pneumonia in hospital at the age of 58. Alan was broadcaster on Radio National and presented programs on food, philosophy and design.
Born in London, Saunders studied philosophy at the University of Leicester and travelled to Australia in 1981 to continue research at the Australian National University where he earned his PhD.
He joined the ABC in 1988 and has been hosting broadcasts there regularly since. Last Tuesday he felt ill while presenting his radio show and was admitted to hospital.
In 1992 he was awarded the Pascall Prize for critical writing and broadcasting and in 2007 was awarded the Australasian Association of Philosophy Special media Prize. He also the author of a book : A Is For Apple and Alanna.
Alan lived a few doors away from the Shuttle and we often ran into him in the street or at the many foodie shindigs around Sydney. His Radio National program The Philosopher's Zone was required listening and one of the ABC's most downloaded program. Alan's calm, cultured deep voice was very re-assuring in a world gone haywire- as though everything was OK. He'll be deeply missed.

Bullied Teen Controversy Spins Out of Control
It's another classic example of the power of the net that has seen Justin Beiber, Cody Simpson and Christian The Lion shoot to stardom after their youtube videos went haywire.
This youtube video appeared quietly about 4 months ago. It's young US teen Jonah Mowry talking about his experiences as a bullied gay lad in school.
He prefaced it with a message that he felt suicidal. It's a real tearjerker and thousands of followers linked to it and pretty soon Jonah had over 2 milliion hits and tens of thousands of 'likes' compared to a few hundred 'dislikes'.
Then the blogger Perez Hilton chipped in and pretty soon Jonah had thousands of twitter followers and was becoming a media star. The US ABC network interviewed him and singer Ricky Martin tweeted “one big rib breaking hug :0) ! Stay strong buddy! You are 1 courageous young man!!!”.
An appearance on Ellen de Generes was surely soon to follow.
Now Jonah has a new video up were he appears to be fairly flippant about his previous claims and says he has 'thousands' of people at school who like him. The backlash is only just beginning as the video responses are posted on youtube giving young Jonah a roasting and claiming him to be a fake. What do think ?
and a response to Jonah :
