Breaking news

Tragic news today as it was revealed the beautiful model Annalise Braakensiek has been found dead in her Potts Point apartment.
Braakensiek, pictured here in Whispers' photo from some years ago where she jumped out of a cake at a birthday party for fashion designer Alex Perry was 45.

The Australian model and popular Page 3 pin-up girl in the UK's Sun newspaper had been married to stockbroker Danny Goldberg but the pair split up in April last year. She had moved into her $1M Potts Point flat in June.
The cause of death is not known and police have said there are no suspicious circumstances. Friends alerted police when they hadn't heard from Braakensiek for a few days.

Went To A Garden Party

Pictured in our snap is TV personality Deborah Hutton attending the elegant garden party at Boomerang, that  much sought after mansion in Elizabeth Bay. The Shuttle has attended numerous parties there over the years with invites from at least 3 owners during it's long life. Guests can come from all areas of society. We've encountered Prince Frederick and Princess Mary of Denmark, Tom Cruise during the filming of Mission Impossible 2 and the recently released Guantanamo Bay inmate David Hicks chatting to the NSW Governor Marie Bashir.

The Governor also attended Friday's event, the launch of an expected yearly Mother’s Day garden party in support of the Murdoch Children's Research Institute which honours the Institutes founder, the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. Amongst those attending - Sarah Murdoch, Ros Packer, Alex Perry and Lady Primrose Potter with treats dished up by chef Darren Taylor.

Below is Ricky Nelson's wonderful 1985 hit "Went To A Garden Party".

Weight Watchers

AFTER BANNING LARA BINGLE from his parade, designer Alex Perry is now flagellating himself after yesterday's opening parade for Sydney's Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. Perry has said that using ultra thin supermodel Cassi Van Den Dungen was a mistake.
As our snap shows Cassi does look rather gaunt although the camera can fib. Alex appeared on the 9 Network's Morning Show and told hosts Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson that it "was a mistake" after looking at photos from the show.
Mia Freedom has bought into the debate on Mammia, describing the parade as The Hunger Games while Marie Claire editor Jackie Frank has expressed concerns over Cassi's health. Van Den Dungen helpfully Instagramed a snap of her lunch which seems to consist of 2 croissants, water and a hugely unhealthy energy drink- not the sort of thing to be recommending to young girls who may be following her career.
The obsession with thinness is always evident during Fashion Weak and anyone who has shopped with a larger lady as the Shuttle did last week knows how ridiculous it has all become. Looking for larger lingerie at both Myer & David Jones in Bondi's Westfield proved fruitless (and just finding an assistant was like Stanley discovering Dr Livingstone) Racks and racks of unsold stock- thin stock -was on display yet nothing for the average sized or above, woman as most Australian women are.
Yet in the specialty shop Storm In A D Cup just down the road in Edgecliff they were doing a roaring trade with an assistant who not only knew her stock intimately but took over $3000 in the half hour we spent there. There are lessons all round which are bound to be ignored.

Fun On the Runway

David Jones launched their Spring Summer 2013 collection with new Fashion Ambassador Jessica Gomes. With a set of rich white walls, poolside bars, bougainvillea and high shine surfaces DJ's On Seven guests set out on a jet set adventure. Think Slim Aarons, Cap D'Antibes and the Italian Rivera where high fashion meets the clearest of blue skies followed by hot, steamy and decadent Summer nights. Well that's what the press release says. And good luck to them. Here are a few snaps from the evening with guests and models and a couple of bonus backstage snaps of Jessica with Zac & Jordon Stenmark.

Amiable Lock now lives in Dubai where he is overseeing successful fashion forums. Kirsten lives there as well and is the fashion and beauty editor on Dubai's Viva Magazine.

Sipping Champers From A Saucer

It's rather a nice drop even sipped from an over-sized saucer.

Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque was the champagne for the night and those saucers were specially created over sized champagne glasses to celebrate Waterford's new adaptions of their classic pattern ; Lismore Diamond.

Waterford's head design honcho from Ireland Jim O'Leary hosted a swell party to celebrate 60 years of Lismore at the magnificent Cell Block Theatre in the East Sydney Design School. Guests were led up a candle lit path to a line of waiters bearing rather heavy trays of the champagne saucers and so well behaved were they, not one was broken over the next few hours.

Waterford's latest Lismore collection really are quite exquisite in the most beautiful colours-red, blue silver, purple and green. We're lucky in Sydney to have tap water that is not only drinkable but better than most bottled waters.  Try a glass in a Waterford Crystal tumbler. You'll never look back!
Amongst those who sipped: Megan Gale. Charlotte Dawson, Alex Perry and Lauryn Eagle.

Check out the new Waterford range at their website.

Tina's Perfect Storm & My Role In Mommie Dearest

You have to feel sympathy for Tina Aldiss, a publicist at Mango PR who wrote an article for the media website Mumbrella.
Tina was commenting on the current woes at Fairfax Media where up to 1900 workers are to be laid off over the coming years. News Ltd will do likewise. The Shuttle has been quizzing hacks and snappers from both organisations and the fear and loathing is palpable.

Tina reckons when printed newspapers crash and burn her job flogging Arnott's biscuits and McDonald's Chicken burghers will be that much easier as she harnesses net power.
In the mean time the comments section has gone ballistic attacking poor Tina with most thinking her timing is a bit off.

The lines between reporting and publicising were blurred well over two decades ago and it's gotten worse. The Shuttle has worked both sides of the fence and gave up trying to think in terms of ethics years ago and decided to concentrate on survival.

Our only gripe is the attitude of Australian PRs and publicists ( Sydney ones are the worse.. Melbourne publicists are far better mannered). Many come across as far grander that the product they are flogging yet are really quite ignorant when it comes to inventive publicity.

Charlotte Dawson, Sarah Murdoch & Alex Perry at the WALL.
Hence the rise of the tiresome photographic/publicity board that pops up at every event from a blockbuster movie premiere to a minor beauty product launch.
And the press section will be crammed with paparazzi with sometime half a dozen working (unpaid and only on commission) for one agency who reckon the scatter gun approach will get sales. Amass hundreds of snaps of the same celebrity in varying poses and a handful might sell.

Regular Shuttle contributor Bill Ranken (right) who knows just about everyone in town and probably dated their grandmothers (at 81 years of age) discovered this recently at a charity bash for a children's hospital.
He was snubbed at the entrance by a bright-eyed 20 something publicity operative who scolded him for missing the 'wall' and scoffed at the idea guests could be photographed whilst sitting at tables. The fact the guests were the same people we all see day after day, week after week in this town was incidental.

And the problem is not really that Tina Aldriss is just stating the obvious, newspapers and magazines are responsible for blurring the lines and you can't blame a publicist for taking advantage of the fact.

Rupert Murdoch's Daily Telegraph has long been criticized for it's Sydney Confidential pages which resemble at times, a series of press releases full of inane information. It's significant that the former top Packer PR and journalist Annette Sharp has now been given her own Saturday edition spread and is delving into the lives of anyone who isn't Lady GaGa or Beyonce in an obvious move to challenge er rivals-not that it should be too hard.
As for the Shuttle, we have been shameless at times and never let accuracy get in the way of a good publicity campaign.

Years ago we travelled to New York with the UK Daily Express' William Hickey correspondent, the late Timothy Swallow and set up shop in a suite at the Waldorf Astoria in order to interview US celebrities for a series of show biz style books commissioned by a top promoter.

One day we went to a Times Square cinema to see the just released Mommie Dearest with Faye Dunnaway starring as Joan Crawford. Hollywood had boycotted the film, the star and producers deeming it a treacherous portrayal of a Hollywood legend.
 We loved it.

At one point in the movie Joan beats her children late one night after discovering their wardrobes contained wire coat hangers (apparently Joan had a thing about wire hangers), screaming "NO WIRE COAT HANGERS !!!"

That night over cocktails at Studio 54 (working our way through our generous expenses allowance) we concocted a story that groups of fans were attending theatres and when the scene appeared, would wave wire coat hangers in the air. The Daily Express duly ran the tale which was picked up and swept the world's newspapers and TV news broadcasts.

Life imitated art and soon people were appearing at cinemas and doing just that. Not only had we created a movement (and a Wikipedia page), we had given the ailing flick a million dollar boost in free advertising by propelling it into the mass media.
All for the cost of a few drinks !

Mrs Murdoch Steps Out

For the second time in as many weeks the beautiful Sarah Murdoch, wife of Lachlan Murdoch has fronted the cameras.
They're tall, beautiful and Aussie- Sarah Murdoch (centre) with contestants from the show
Sarah hosted a preview of Australia's Next Top Model at Fox Studios last night followed by a drinks party and for once, the media was far too polite to mention that matter that has consumed them for the past 3 weeks.
They should be models : gorgeous Charlotte Dawson with some hunky footballers
But where do they find such beautiful and tall girls?. As you can see from our exclusive snaps another bevy of statuesque teens are battling to win a lucrative modelling career.

They'll choose Australia's Next Top Model : Charlotte Dawson, Sarah Murdoch & Alex Perry

Fashion Brings Out The Big Names

David Jones was first cab off the rank with their Autumn Winter Fashion Launch at the Elizabeth Street store.

Dannii

Just to show there were no hard feelings now that the fashion duo from Sass & Bide, Heidi Middleton and Sarah Jane Clarke have decamped to the Myer chain of stores, a DJ's spokesman happily told any interviewer who would listen that sales of Sass & Bide fashion had been just a tiny, teeny fraction of DJ's income.

Myers must think otherwise having forked over $42M for around 65% of the brand.

Melissa George
Trundling through the grand marble floored store and past a photo station and then in circles around the ground floor and up 7 sets of escalators to DJ's former floor of boutique shopettes were Jane Ferguson , Harry M.Miller, Jan Logan, Grant Pearce, Mark Patrick, Lyndey Milan and Skye Leckie amongst the usual suspects who front Sydney and Melbourne's fashion parades.

Dannii Minouge was there and so was actor Melissa George , both looking trim and glam. ( If you have a spare few hours catch up on Melissa in the excellent HBO series In Treatment in which she stars opposite Gabriel Byrne).

Leggy beauties Sarah Murdoch and Megan Gale waltzed by. Alex Perry and Collette Dinnigan sat with Camilla Franks-all had their wares featured in the parade as did George Gross and Harry Who (both with deep suntans). Akira Isogawa. Carla Zampatti and her equally talented daughter Bianca Spender showed their latest and it wouldn't be a fashion show without Alex Perry, Alannah Hill and Josh Goot.

Needless to say, the gallons of Veuve Clicquot were eagerly quaffed.

Successful Cross Promotions # 1

Alex Perry
One of Australia's most  popular fashion designers Alex Perry appeared last night on the panel show 'Talkin Bout Your Generation' compered by comedian Shaun Micallef.

Perry, lying in a bed with panelist Amanda Keller was posed a sticky question-to identify a mystery gurgling sound.

Alex quickly responded : "the sound of an Electrolux washing machine in the spin cycle" he correctly answered to a hearty round of studio applause.

The fact that Perry has an ongoing promotional marketing deal with Electrolux Home Products is entirely co-incidental !
